Can Blueberries Fight Gum Disease?

added on: September 28, 2015

A new study conducted at Université Laval in Canada has found that an extract from lowland blueberry bushes may be as effective in the treatment of gum disease as antibiotics. The extract, accinium angustifolium Ait., was shown to have a countering effect on Fusobacterium nucleatum, a bacterium that plays a major role in gum disease. The polyphenol rich extract also worked to reduce inflammation – which indicates it may have several therapeutic uses in the treatment of gum disease.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Red or swollen gum tissue
  • Gums that bleed when brushed
  • Chronic bad breath
  • A bad taste in the mouth that will not go away
  • Changes in tooth color

These symptoms typically occur in the early stages of gum disease. When left untreated, additional symptoms including tooth loss and bone necrosis are possible. Equally worrisome, bacteria from gum disease is directly linked to heart attack, stroke, and liver and kidney problems. The best way to avoid these more severe issues is to seek treatment as soon as symptoms occur.
