Clear Braces vs. Invisalign®

added on: April 21, 2015

Clear braces and Invisalign® are names often used interchangeably, but they are actually very different orthodontic treatments. Clear braces, like traditional braces, use a combination of brackets and arch-wire to pull teeth into alignment. The brackets and wire used for clear braces are see though, but the process is identical to traditional orthodontia.

Invisalign® uses a series of customized aligner trays to push teeth into alignment. This process is substantially faster than straightening a smile with clear braces and offers a number of unique advantages for adults and older teens.

Because Invisalign® aligners can be removed, there are no dietary restrictions or troubles maintaining optimal oral hygiene during treatment. By contrast, clear braces may necessitate avoiding many fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods, and can make brushing and flossing much more difficult. What’s more, once brackets are removed from teeth, underlying enamel is often stained or discolored – an issue completely avoided by choosing Invisalign®.

Of course, there is not a single option that will meet the needs of every patient. During your orthodontic consultation with Cedar Rapids dentist Dr. Blain McLaughlin it can best be determined which option is right for you.
