How to Prevent Scratching Your Porcelain Restorations

added on: August 11, 2015

Porcelain restorations such a dental crowns and veneers are incredibly strong, enabling them to serve the same functions as your natural teeth. Like natural tooth enamel, porcelain can be damaged and scratched when not properly cared for. To help prevent damaging your crowns or porcelain veneers while at the same time keeping them clean, it is important to use products designed to work with dental restorations for your at-home routine.

If you have questions about caring for your dental restorations, call Cedar Rapids cosmetic dentist Dr. Blaine McLaughlin at 319-373-5082 to schedule an appointment.

To prevent scratching your porcelain restorations:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Use a toothpaste designed for restorations or choose one without abrasives such as baking soda
  • Do not use whitening toothpastes or mouthwashes
  • In addition to these steps, you should avoid mouthwashes with alcohol or other astringents. These will not scratch your restorations, but may cause them to come loose and fall out.

Caring for porcelain veneers and crowns should not require much modification to your current routine. If you have questions or would like additional information about caring for restorations, please contact Dental Touch Associates and schedule an appointment at our Marion, Iowa office today.
